If you have been to Highline of New York, you will also love the old railway station and railway line of Singapore!
This rail corridor is being conserved and construction is underway to it into a green corridor.
Constructed in 1902, the Bukit Timah Railway Station in the pictures opened in 1915 as part of the Singapore-Kranji railway system. This is likely to be converted into a gallery.
Interesting facts about the Singapore-Malaysia Old KTM Railway Line.
You stepped into Malaysia when you cross the railway lines –
Do you know that the land on and beside the railway lines in Singapore belonged to Malaysia for many years? I remembered, as a kid, seeing all kinds of crops like corn and banana planted beside the tracks wondering why they were so out of place!
This deadlock was broken only 4-5 years ago when these lands were returned via a ‘land swap’ agreement between the 2 countries.
Expansion of the steel rails –
On hot days, steel rails exposed to direct sunshine can become hotter, especially under the hot sun of Singapore. The resulting expansion may cause extreme compression and buckling. That is why if you look carefully, the metal parts are not riveted down but are held on with ‘holders’ attached to the wooden cross ties.
What are the stones on the tracks for?
The crushed stones around train tracks are what is known as ballast. Their purpose is to hold the wooden cross ties in place, which in turn hold the rails in place.
Is the old railway station recommended for families?
It is great to tell the children about the history of the railway in Singapore. If your children love trains, then it is a bonus! (Though there is no train to be seen.)
****Updated*** – As most Singaporeans know, the rail corridor is already opened!
I see jogger running into the forest beside this part of the railway but not so sure where it leads to. (Let me know in the comments if you know.)
I would recommend it if you happen to be in the area. We went in the evening so the sky is beautiful and the sun is not so hot.
How do you access the old railway station?
Driving: You can park at King Albert Park mall and take a short 5min walk along Bukit Timah Road (against the traffic) until you come to an opening to a dirt road on your right. Walk along the dirt road for another 3-5min and you will reach the old railway station.
